Why So Many Kids Can't Sit Still Today

A therapist goes to middle school and tries to sit still and focus. She can’t. Neither can the kids.

This is a follow-up to two popular posts about the problems kids face when they are forced to sit still in school for hours on end without a break. The first, written by pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, was titled “Why so many kids can’t sit still in school today” and discussed how being inactive affects students’ ability to stay focused and learn, and in some cases leads to improper diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. The next piece was titled
The right — and surprisingly wrong — ways to get kids to sit still in class.”

Hanscom has now written a third related piece, this one specifically about middle-schoolers. Hanscom told me that she was curious about the effects of restricted movement on students in middle school, so she went to a local middle school to observe what was going on inside classrooms and talk to teachers and parents. The following post explains Hanscom’s experience and findings at the middle school she visited.  Hanscom is the founder of TimberNook, a nature-based development program designed to foster creativity and independent play outdoors in New England.

Teaching Young Children About God in Everyday Life {Truth for Tots}

Hi everyone, I saw this post from Jenni Mullinix and I can't help but sharing it with you. I was raised up in a Christain family which I grew up to cherish. As a mother, I'm trying to do the same but due to everyday stress (work, school, family, households, after-school-activities,e.t.c.), I hardly have time to sit with my kids to talk about God or study the bible.
I find this post helpful because it touches different ways we can teach our young children about God in everyday life. Hope you enjoy it.

One of the most significant things we can to as mothers to teach young children about the Lord is to live out our faith in everyday life, sharing Biblical truths along the way through our words and actions.
As Sally Clarkson shares in Desperate: Hope for the Weary Mom,
“It is so vitally important that we live with integrity by choosing to worship God in front of our children through all the moments of our day.”
Today I would like to share with you four things that I try to do every day to help my toddler begin her journey toward authentic faith and a personal relationship with Christ.

god every day

How to Teach Little Ones about God Throughout the Day

1. Pray with your kids. You can do this in the morning, at mealtime, during family devotions, before bedtime, or all of the above. Whenever you choose, it is important for your little ones to hear you pray so they can learn to pray themselves. Understanding that God listens to our prayers it an important lesson for young children to learn in order for them to grow in their faith.

2. Read faith-based books. Setting aside time each day to read Bible stories or other inspirational tales can be a great way to introduce toddlers to God and teach important character qualities. And there are so many great Christian books for you to choose from! I especially like Biblical resources that incorporate academic learning.

3. Sing and listen to Christian music. Teach your littles popular Christian children songs, hymns and praise songs. Play worship music while doing chores or in the car. Singing is also one of the best tools to use for memorizing Bible verses when they are ready.

4. Talk about God. Incorporate God in your everyday conversations. When taking a nature walk, mention how God created everything they see. Discuss how we should be thankful to the Lord for providing the blessings we have in our lives. Remind them of God’s commandments when they are dealing with temptation. Although little ones won’t completely understand all that you say, they will be hearing to the truth of God, which will take root in their hearts.

As you begin to make these simple actions a part of your daily routine, I believe you will be amazed at how much your children begin to pick up. My daughter (currently 19 months) is often the one initiating prayer before dinner and randomly begins singing praise songs while helping me with the dishes or riding in the car. Little moments like that make this mama’s heart full of joy!
What are some ways you teach your children about God throughout the day?

One Last Look

Take one last look as autumn leaves fall
From the beautiful trees standing so tall,
Season changes never bring sadness
Each new season is a time of gladness.

Take one last look at autumn leaves
Blowing gently in the breeze,
Each changing season God sends
And we know each season ends.

Thank you, God, for one last look
And the beauty of this day,
As autumn begins to fade
We know another season is on the way.

The Strength of A Woman

Wednesday Reflections:

This brought tears to my eyes and I coundn't resist sharing it with you wonderful women out there. You are so beautifully and wonderfully made.

http://static.wallarc.com/51b2b761e74ad20499.jpg

When God created woman he was working late on the 6th day..

An angel came by and asked." Why spend so much time on her ?".

The lord answered. " Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her?".....

" She must be washable but not made of plastic, ..
have more than 200 moving parts which must be replaceable

she must function on all kinds of foods, ...

she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time,

give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart ,

she must do all this with only two hands,.."

She cures herself when sick and can work 18 hours a day".... ...
THE ANGEL was impressed. .." Just two hands.....impossible !" ..

And this is the standard model ? ! ...."

The Angel came closer and touched the woman"...... ..

." But you have made her so soft, Lord".....

." She is soft", said the Lord,

" But I have made her strong. You can't imagine what she can endure and overcome "...

."Can she think?" The Angel asked...

The Lord answered. " Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate" ...
.
The Angel touched her cheeks.....

" Lord, it seems this creation is leaking ! You have put too many burdens on her. " ...

."She is not leaking...it is a tear" The Lord corrected the Angel...

" What's it for?" Asked the Angel..... .
.
The Lord said. " Tears are her way of expressing
her grief,
her doubts,
her love,
her loneliness,
her suffering and
her pride."...

THIS made a big impression on the Angel,

" Lord, you are genius.
You thought of everything.
A woman is indeed marvellous !".... ...
.
Lord said." Indeed she is.

She has strength that amazes a man.

She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens.

She holds happiness, love and opinions.

She smiles when she feels like screaming.

She sings when she feels like crying,
cries when happy and
laughs when afraid.

She fights for what she believes in.

Her love is unconditional.

Her heart is broken when a next-of-kin or a friend dies

but she finds strength to get on with life." ..

The Angel asked : So she is a perfect ?

The lord replied : No. She has just one drawback

" She often forgets what she is worth".

The Heart Of Forgiveness

Thoughtful Thursday - A Teenager Who Lost Both Legs Forgives Step Mum For A Deliberate Arson Attack Which Killed Her Dad.

Josefina who was severely burned beyond recognition by her step mum who deliberately set fire that killed her dad said she has forgiven her. She thankfully and in tears appreciate the firemen that saved her life and that of her sisters.
image
Josefina Vilela lost both of her legs below the knee and part of her left arm after the fire at her home in Walsall, West Midlands in 2011.The blaze – which left Josefina with 60 per cent burns and killed her father Carlos – was started by her stepmother, Georgina Vilela, who has since been jailed for murder.

image

Josefina, who was just 14 years old when the fire took place, spent 18 months in hospital and has since learned to walk again using two prosthetic legs. But despite the horrific events which tore the teenager’s life apart, she told this week how she has now forgiven her father’s killer.

image

Josefina told how of her forgiveness on the day she was reunited with the fire crew who saved her from the burning building. The inspirational teenager wept as she was given a bouquet of flowers by firefighters at Walsall Fire Station earlier this week during a visit organized. She said: ‘I’ve been wanting to meet these men ever since the night of the fire to tell them how amazing they are. They saved my life. They are my heroes.’

image
Stepmother Georgina is currently serving a minimum 23-year jail term for murder and arson with intent to endanger life. She poured petrol over Carlos as he lay in bed and the resulting fire quickly engulfed the house where then-14-year-old Josefina and her three sisters were asleep.

Women Can't Have It All

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi: No, Women Can't Have It All

http://geronimo.typepad.fr/.a/6a010535d58d31970b01127942f7f228a4-pi

Have you heard of Indra Nooyi?

She’s the Chairman and CEO of Pepsico and she’s also an incredible role model for working women.
Why?
Not only is she one of the most successful business leaders, but she’s fun, warm hearted, original  and a humanist.
While topping Forbes.com’s list of the 100 most powerful women in the world, Indra Nooyi has a very irreverent personal style…
At Pepsi Co, she has long been known for patrolling the office barefoot, singing in the halls.

In an unusually frank interview, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi said she doesn't think that women can "have it all," adding that a career requires women to sacrifice some aspects of motherhood.

"If you ask our daughters," she said in a frank interview on work-life balance, "I'm not sure they will say that I've been a good mom."

"I don't think women can have it all. I just don't think so," she told David Bradley, owner of the Atlantic Media Company, at the Aspen Ideas Festival earlier this week. "We pretend we have it all. We pretend we can have it all," Nooyi, who has been married 34 years and has two daughters, said.

She Continued:
And every day you have to make a decision about whether you are going to be a wife or a mother; in fact, many times during the day you have to make those decisions. And you have to co-opt a lot of people to help you. We co-opted our families to help us. We plan our lives meticulously so we can be decent parents. But if you ask our daughters, I'm not sure they will say that I've been a good mom. I'm not sure. And I try all kinds of coping mechanisms.
As an example, Nooyi explained she had to usually skip a Wednesday morning class coffee with other mothers at her daughter's Catholic school.
My daughter would come home and she would list off all the mothers that were there and say, "You were not there, mom."
The first few times, I would die with guilt. But I developed coping mechanisms. I called the school and I said, "Give me a list of mothers that are not there." So when she came home in the evening she said, "You were not there, you were not there."
And I said, "Ah ha, Mrs. Redd wasn't there, Mrs. So-and-so wasn't there. So I'm not the only bad mother."

Despite such coping mechanisms, Nooyi says there's no way to square a high-pressure career with raising kids.

"My observation, David, is that the biological clock and the career clock are in total conflict with each other. Total, complete conflict. When you have to have kids, you have to build your career. Just as you're rising to middle management, your kids need you because they're teenagers, they need you for the teenage years," she said.

One of Nooyi's solutions was to enlist her employees for help. When her daughter was young and wanted to play Nintendo, for instance, she would call Nooyi's office. A receptionist would run her through a list of questions, including, "Have you finished your homework?" If her daughter said yes, the receptionist would give her permission to play Nintendo for 30 minutes.

In addition to discussing parenting, Nooyi also relayed an anecdote about her own mother. When Nooyi found out she would be named president of PepsiCo in, she says she headed home early — at 10 p.m., instead of midnight — to share the news.
I got home about 10, got into the garage, and my mother was waiting at the top of the stairs. And I said, "Mom, I've got great news for you." She said, "Let the news wait. Can you go out and get some milk?"
I looked in the garage and it looked like my husband was home. I said, "What time did he get home?" She said, "8:00." I said, "Why didn't you ask him to buy the milk?" "He's tired." [...] She said, just get the milk. We need it for the morning. So like a dutiful daughter, I went out and got the milk and came back.
I banged it on the counter and I said, "I had great news for you. I've just been told that I'm going to be president on the Board of Directors. And all that you want me to do is go out and get the milk, what kind of a mom are you?"
And she said to me, "Let me explain something to you. You might be president of PepsiCo. You might be on the Board of Directors. But when you enter this house, you're the wife, you're the daughter, you're the daughter-in-law, you're the mother. You're all of that. Nobody else can take that place. So leave that damned crown in the garage. And don't bring it into the house. You know I've never seen that crown."

A Tomato Story

Thoughtful Thursday

A jobless man applied for the position of ‘office boy’ at a very big company.
The employer interviewed him, then a test: clean the floor.
“You are hired.” – the employer said. ”Give me your email address, and I’ll send you the application to fill, as well as when you will start.”
The man replied, “I don’t have a computer, neither an email.”
“I’m sorry,” said the employer, “if you don’t have an email , you cannot have the job.”
The man left with no hope. He didn’t know what to do, with only $10 USD in his pocket.
He then decided to go to the supermarket, bought a 10 kg tomato crate, then sold the tomatoes door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded and doubled his capital. He repeated the operation 3 times and returned home with $60 USD. The man realized that he could survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and returned late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday. Shortly later, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.
Five years later, the man’s company was one of the biggest food retailers. He started to plan his family’s future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded, the broker asked him his email. The man replied: “I don’t have an email.”
The broker replied curiously, “You don’t have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Do you imagine what position you could have if you had an email?”
The man paused for a while, and replied: “An office boy!”
Don’t be discouraged if something is not in your favor today. Better opportunities are always waiting ahead.

Girlfriends: 6 Types of Friends Every Woman Should Hold On To

 http://libertysnippet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/girl-friends.jpg

Great Friendships Are Priceless

The good friends in your life are often overshadowed by the drama the bad ones bring. Sure, you complain about the faux friends in your world – you know, the shady ones, you can’t half trust, who are more like acquaintances, and you can’t wait to hang up the phone and talk about? – but what about the keepers? The one who calls you back to check on you, even when you rudely told her to leave you be; the one who went with you to that party so you could save face when your date blew you off. If you’re blessed enough to have one of these six friend types in your life, hold on tight.

The Kindred Soul

She may not always have the answers, but you’re kindred souls, so she will understand. She can sense when something’s off in your world, and you know just when she needs you most. You’re sisters from another mother and you’ll want to continue to love and cherish her the way you do your own family.

The Motivator

Her friendship challenges you to go places you’ve never been, do things you swore you couldn’t, and reach heights you never imagined you could soar to. She’s an inspiration, and she’s not afraid to push you when it counts. Put simply: Your relationship is priceless. Remember that.

The Confidant

Your private matters are safest with her, and you know it; that’s why you tell her everything. She’ll guard your secrets with her life, so don’t you go giving up any of hers. Continue to be each other’s ears to listen. You’ll always need a trustworthy friend like this along the road of life.

The Teammate

If you have an extra ticket, she’s there. When it’s raining, and no on else feels like coming out for a drink, she’s already on her way. You know her well: She’s that friend you can truly count on to be down for whatever and right there by your side. You can’t imagine your social life without her, so be willing to put in the work it takes to be sure she sticks around. Remember to be there when she needs a no-fuss buddy.

The Fighter

Most-likely the loudest one in your circle, this friend has zero problems telling you what’s on her mind. Her no-nonsense attitude is a breath of fresh air when you need someone who’s not afraid to keep it real. She’ll stand up for you even when you’re not prepared to defend yourself and she loves just as hard as she fights. Know this woman? Keep her around!

The Rock

When you’re at your weakest, she’s strong for you. Her words of wisdom and support echo in your heart and soul and lift you back to happy places. She’s made room in her heart for you, so make sure you thank her for being your rock, and always show her some love.
If you’re lucky enough to have one of these types of women by your side in life, never let them go  -  Charli Penn

Summer Food Fun

This month's issue highlights ideas and tips in creating nutritious meals for your family. June brings us many reasons to enjoy healthy eating including National Fruit & Vegetable Month and MyPlate's third birthday.

A special shout out to Dads!  We hope Father's Day is a terrific family day for you. Thanks for everything you do to raise your children and in a safe and loving family.  Enjoy your day!

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Month
The USDA Economic Research Service posted details of a study titled, "Healthy Vegetables Undermined by the Company They Keep". The results of this study show that many Americans are consuming extra calories and salt when they eat vegetables because of how the vegetables are prepared. Cheesy sauces and deep frying are examples of common cooking methods that are unhealthy and are giving vegetables a bad rap.

Celebrate fresh flavor of summer vegetables this month by going "au naturel"! Try new techniques that offer the best natural flavor without adding extra salt and fat. Here are some suggestions:
  • Choose baking, steaming, or grilling vegetables over frying.
  • Season vegetables with herbs, salt-free seasonings or a light sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.
  • Have raw pre-cut vegetables such as carrots, celery, and cauliflower in the refrigerator for snacking.
  • Toss salad with fresh salsa instead of salad dressing.
  • Serve steamed greens, like kale or spinach, as a bed under grilled meats.

Father's Day - June 15
A family that cooks together enjoys their meals more together! Put Dad in charge of slicing and dicing. Dads know that using the right tool is super important in getting jobs done well. Knives are the tools of trade in cooking and a worthy investment that will make cooking easier and more enjoyable.
Unsure which knife to use? Download our FREE Knife Tip Sheet to find the best blade for the job and more.

MyPlate 3rd Birthday - June 2
Three years and still going strong!  The MyPlate guidelines have made it so easy to develop healthier eating habits for families across the country. Choosing MyPlate is an affordable eating style, too.  Read Shopping MyPlate on a Budget to learn more about saving money while eating healthy. Here are a few budget-friendly tips to help ease your grocery bill:
  • Fruits/Vegetables: Buy "in season" and "on sale" produce. They are usually less expensive and are at their peak flavor.
  • Grains: Shop the bulk food aisle of your grocery store for the best bargains for rice, pasts, cereals and more.
  • Proteins:  Go meatless more often, beans, peas, eggs and canned fish is often less expensive than the options at the meat counter.
  • Dairy:  Check out the store brand prices for cheese, milk and yogurt, they tend to be the best deals.

                                 National Great Outdoors Month
June is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with a family picnic. Let the kids pick the spot while you plan the menu.

Plenty of great memories have been made over summertime picnics with family and friends. Keep your memories happy by practicing food safety with outdoor dining. Here are some tips to enjoy safe outdoor meals in warm weather:
  • Keep Cold Foods Cold
  • Cleanliness Matters
  • Cook Meats Thoroughly
For more advice on outdoor meal safety in warm weather read Summer Food Safety Tips.
